For the first time in American history, more Americans 50 and older are divorced than widowed. Fifty years ago, only 2.8% of Americans 50 and older were divorced. In 2011, 15.4% of Americans 50 and older were divorced and another 2.1% were separated. While on the other hand, only 13.5% of Americans 50 and older were widowed in 2011. The divorce rate for those 50 and older has doubled since 1990. Some sociologists are calling it the gray divorce revolution.
